The Play the Institution Shines Continuing to Strengthen the Presence of Bahraini Theatre on the International Stage
The play “The Institution” has firmly established its notable presence on both the Arab and international levels, as one of the أبرز productions of Al-Sawari Theatre, presenting a theatrical model that combines the strength of the text with the rigor of its directorial execution.
The work is written by Antonio Buero Vallejo and directed by Issa Al-Sindeed. It is based on a text that raises profound existential questions about illusion and reality, freedom and oppression, through the story of a group of characters living within a space that initially appears comfortable and orderly, before gradually revealing itself as a closed structure that imposes restrictions on awareness and behavior. Through this construction, the text engages with the idea of falsified perception as a mechanism for escaping a harsh reality, contrasted with faltering attempts to reclaim the truth.
The director adopted a visual and physical approach clearly influenced by Eastern theatre techniques, particularly the style of Tadashi Suzuki. The work foregrounded the actor’s body as a primary expressive tool, through disciplined movement, grounded positioning, and muscular tension that reflects the characters’ inner states. This approach was also evident in the economy of scenographic elements, contrasted with an intensified physical and vocal presence, enhancing the overall character of the performance and granting it a cohesive visual identity.
The play was crowned at the Bahrain Theatre Festival (third edition), winning Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, as well as the Jury Award for Ensemble Performance—affirming the strength of the acting and the integration of the production’s elements. On the international front, “The Institution” was selected among a distinguished lineup of performances at the Arab Theatre Festival held in Oman. It later achieved a significant milestone by being chosen to represent the Kingdom of Bahrain at the Chekhov International Theatre Festival in its 33rd edition—marking the first Bahraini participation in the history of this prestigious festival in Moscow, Russian Federation. This trajectory reflects the growing prominence of “The Institution” as a theatrical production capable of transcending diverse cultural contexts, grounded in a theatrical language built on the body, disciplined performance, and openness of meaning—thereby reinforcing the position of Bahraini theatre on the international stage.
