Hot Coffee Play in Bbahrain Opens the International Oufir Theatre Nights with Questions of Love Fear and Lonelines
The Kingdom of Bahrain opened the first theatrical performances of the inaugural International Oufir Theatre Nights for Duodrama this evening at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah, Oman. Bahrain’s participation was represented by the play Hot Coffee (Qahwa Sakhina), presented by Al-Sawari Theatre. The production was written by the late Abdullah Al-Saadawi, directed by Ibrahim Khalfan, and starred Soudaya Khalifa and Mohammed Al-Marzooq, with sound effects designed by Nader Abdulaal..
The performance was presented before a large audience and drew the attention of theatre practitioners and enthusiasts of the performing arts. The production transported audiences into a deeply human world centered on a man and a woman seated before two cups of coffee. What begins as a fleeting encounter gradually unfolds into a space where memories, dreams, anxieties, and long-deferred questions emerge. Blending reality with imagined imagery, the play explores human relationships in an age where real identities increasingly intersect with virtual personas. It raises profound questions about loss, loneliness, and the fear of the other, inviting audiences to reflect on the complexities of human connection in the modern world.
Director Ibrahim Khalfan said that Hot Coffee is set in a transient café, where a man and a woman sit across from each other, each with a cup of coffee and carrying a multitude of questions. What appears to be an ordinary encounter gradually reveals a world of imagined images, ambiguous truths, and the enduring human anxiety surrounding loss and loneliness. The play takes the audience on a journey through the space between what we say and what we conceal, between a person and their reflection, and between love and fear. It is a production that contemplates human relationships in an era where real identities increasingly intertwine with virtual ones, ultimately leaving us with an open-ended question: Do we truly meet?
